Papers

Online references to public sites where papers on decision tree learning, machine learning and data mining can be obtained are listed below. Direct links to some of the papers mentioned in the tutorial section of this site are provided at the bottom of the corresponding pages. Academic research papers are not always publicly available though and are only available via subscriptions (such as for the IEEE journals and Kluwer’s Machine Learning).

Citeseer

One of the largest collections of links to online publicly available research papers and articles. Full text downloads in PDF or PS. A lot of recent papers can be found here on topics such as hybrid decision trees and combining mutliple models. A good place to start.

    Hello,
I am a researchers using WEKA software. I was studying C 4.5 algorithm, but was unable to understand the term information gain. Could you please guide me in this.
    Thanking You
    With best regards

Information gain is an attribute selection measure, i.e, it selects an attribute that best splits the given traininig dataset.

In order to understand the information gain first u need to know about decision trees.

A decision tree is a tree in which each internal nodes represents the test on an attribute and each terminal node represents the class labels.

In order to construct decision tree we need to select the splitting attribute from the training set and for this to be happen we need information gain.

    Check out the following paper:

RainForest A Framework for Fast Decision Tree Construction of Large Datasets (1998) by Johannes Gehrke, Raghu Ramakrishnan, Venkatesh Ganti. Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery.

You might also want to look at the decision tree classifiers SLIQ and SPRINT.
